If you are someone who has suffered, is currently suffering or know someone who suffers from OCD, I can completely relate and understand how hard and consuming this disorder can be. I too suffer from OCD. Although I am not on the highest spectrum of OCD, I obsessively clean, need order and control over my environment. I can obsess over intrusive thoughts, of which some consume me to the point where I become very anxious. I have learned how to cope with this disorder and as a result, do not suffer the way I used to. I have outlined some signs and symptoms of OCD below, and will further discuss the metaphysical perspective of why this may be happening.
OBSESSIVE HAND WASHING/ FEAR OF GETTING SICK
One of the obsessive behaviors is worrying about bacteria, disease or anything dirty in fear of getting sick. These compulsive thoughts lead to other thoughts that tie into creating a fear of death. I have noticed within my own practice, and working with families with children, this behaviour and pattern in children when their parents are not on the same page with parenting styles. It’s as though the child feels responsible for their own well-being.
INTRUSIVE THOUGHTS
It is completely normal to have thoughts that can consume our well-being. Intrusive thoughts can become very uncomfortable especially if they are constantly creating worst case scenarios and fear based experiences. From a metaphysical perspective, this happens because in the environment you grew up in, you were constantly met with negativity, unresolved issues and trauma that shocked your nervous system. Therefore, in order to cope, you developed these thoughts so that you had the ability to prepare for the worst case scenario. However, these thoughts can spiral and create a lot of anxiety and depression if you are not addressing them, and working through them with rational thoughts.
RITUALS
With OCD, developing rituals is actually very common. I know for myself that if I don’t tidy up and clean my space in the morning, I cannot fully put all my energy into my work. My disorder “needs” things to be tidy and put away in its place. Again, there is nothing wrong with wanting a tidy and neat space but the compulsion to do it every day can cause a lot of emotional upset and worry, especially if you have other responsibilities that take you away from this behaviour.
Other rituals include: turning lights on and off, checking everything more than twice, etc.
This type of behaviour usually occurs because you grew up in a very resistant environment when you were a child. An environment that possibly consisted of a lot of rules and expectations revolving around you needing to be perfect and not making a mistake. As a result, you developed the ritual of “double checking” everything so you would get the approval and try to meet that expectation. The resistance in the environment created anxiety and the fear of making a mistake. This can consume you and stress you out.
In the videos below, I speak about the MOTHER WOUND:
OCD can be very much tied in with the relationship with your mother. Relationship with mother is the first experience that a child has and depending on how that relationship is connected to the child, it can definitely create certain impulsive, adapted behaviors. Mother symbolizes nutriment. The child learns from the mother’s behavior – how she moves, how she talks, how she calms herself, soothes herself, and how she navigates through stress and her own anxieties. If she can not regulate her own nervous system due to her personal traumas and triggers, it will impact that child’s development.
Where your mother places her energy and time will also have its effects on your own behaviour. In working with my own clients for the last 10 years, I have noticed a few patterns with this wound:
-You were the first born child
-You felt responsible for your siblings
-You were expected to take care of your younger siblings
-You were expected to “know” how to navigate and take on responsibilities at a young age
-You were not allowed to express your anger
-You did not know how to regulate your nervous system
These are just a few of the compulsive behaviours that I have listed. This coupled with your own research, can definitely help you look deeper into it and determine if other compulsive behaviours tie in with what you are feeling.
