It’s amazing when you decide to go into the direction of healing, to find that positive focus can bring you joy, but eventually you still need to deal with your pain. Spirituality can be used as a codependency to avoid your pain, thus being in spiritual bypassing. Negative emotion is not a bad thing, its part of your truth and pain. If you are only focused on the positive you will miss out on the beauty of your true self, your authentic being.
The following are 10 perspectives of spiritual bypassing. Some may be a bit harsh to read but at least you are trying to see the truth in your avoidance.
1. Masking negative feelings with positive.
When someone has a negative emotion or experience you toss positive focus and techniques or tools instead of validating their truth or pain. Being positive is not a bad thing but when it is just masking the negative emotion you feel you will suppress negative emotions that within in time will eventually surface. Embrace the beauty which comes with dealing with our negative emotions, don’t be afraid of it.
2. Judgement.
Not everyone is on the same path as you. When you surround yourself with people which acknowledge your journey and path the process is definitely supported but truth is there will be people in your life that don’t see eye to eye with your feelings, emotions or techniques. Looking at others who are not into spiritually as through they are not dealing with their pain is pure judgement. Passing judgement doesn’t help anyone, ever.
3. Using Popular Lingo.
Saying terms and theories like “we are all one”; “send blessings to those you are angry with”; “forgive and let go”. All are beautiful terms but if you are upset why not work through what you are really “upset” with, where did it stem from? Do not avoid the pain embrace it. The feeling it will leave you with is much more rewarding to yourself and everyone around you.
4. Finding Solace away from home.
Often many run to find peace, solace, and answers to their pain. Traveling to retreats, yoga centers or spiritual grounds to find yourself. Hoping to assist with looking within. Visiting beautiful places, finding tranquility and just being apart of this experiences and places is not a negative but reality is that you need to still return “home” and face the truth. Not just your home in the city but your home within yourself.
5. Masking your pain.
Many of you just ignore the pain, we do this because it’s the easy way out. Others because we don’t want to express anger or hurt because it is deemed as a negative and toxic emotion. This has the opposite effect on your journey. You need to be sitting with your anger and work through it. Expressing pain will finally get you into a space of relief thus, teaching and help you learn your true pain.
6. Being afraid of emotions.
Emotion can be a scary thing to face. Turning away when you start to feel uncomfortable with an emotion is only going to place road blocks in your journey. Don’t be afraid it’s worth the ride.
7. Not doing the “inner work”.
Bottom line – you want results you need to do the work. Seeking more exterior validation by giving away your personal power is short lived gratification. Working on yourself, the inner self and listening to an open heart takes time, patience and dedication but there are beneficial results on long term.
8. Dark night of the soul.
The minute people go through this, they avoid it like the plague! Its dark, it’s feared, it’s not a place of comfort and you are alone but this is the most rewarding aspect of the layers to your truth. It brings sadness and emotional breakdowns but that is when you experience the emotional breakthroughs!
9. Looking for a quick fix.
Rome was not built in a day. This quick fix spiritual bypassing is a product of you wanting to get through this journey quickly. Wanting to see results fast. Not being grounded. This only allows you to ignore your progress. You forget you need to acknowledge your accomplishments to appreciate your progress.
10. Putting a date on your end goal.
This is a forever journey. There is no end date! Healing is a progress, there is no goal or final destination only the love you have for yourself.
Thank you for this … I sometimes struggle with having the feeling of anger towards one particular person – a neighbour who is a bully – and I struggle with this because I believe in karma and try generally to be motivated by good. I understand that I need to accept the anger I sometimes carry that translates as anxiety and have been immobilised as I’ve not known how. Your entry shows me that it’s okay to have that anger and that I don’t need to avoid having bad or angry thoughts simply because I feel like I shouldn’t (as in Italy coming back at me).

The truth is not everyday is roses and butterflies, I have bad days too. Who doesn’t! I’m really struggling with the idea of what is depicted about spiritual healers or teachers.
